Intern - Subsurface - Geophysics
Description
Looking to turn your career dreams into global impact? Explore graduate opportunities with bp. Here you get to work on challenging projects, learn from experts and mentors, and be part of a high-performing team from the get-go. You get the freedom to think boldly, the licence to innovate and the chance to grow in multiple directions. And you get supported, recognised and rewarded along the way.
Our summer internships are 11 weeks. You’ll be based in one team throughout your internship, working on real projects that you’ll be able to manage through to completion. Throughout you’ll have the support of a dedicated line manager and a buddy from one of our early careers programs. Alongside your day-to-day responsibilities, you’ll have the opportunity to attend events and socials with other interns, take part in training sessions to help develop your interpersonal skills and network with leaders from across bp. The program is designed to help build your skills and technical knowledge whilst also allowing you to learn more about life at bp.
For this Summer intern role, we are looking for someone to be part of the Geophysics team. Geophysics is concerned with the acquisition, processing, interpretation and analysis of seismic and other geophysical datasets (e.g. gravity-magnetic surveys) to create an image of the subsurface. Could you be the next geophysicist to join our team?
Here at bp, the combination of geology and geophysics — as geosciences — delivers a powerful description and evaluation of the subsurface, growing our ability to safely deliver hydrocarbons and develop lower carbon energy sources. Join us as a geophysicist and you’ll find our dedication to today and tomorrow stretches beyond the success of our business to the development of our people and their successful careers!
The precise nature of your role will be defined by your skills as well as the needs of the business, but your responsibilities will include:
-
Working on projects and supporting your team to find the best solutions
-
Helping to maintain performance within your team and for bp as a company
-
Building relationships both within bp and with our external partners, collaborating across functions, segments and teams to deliver excellence
-
Demonstrating drive and dedication through the bp beliefs with an emphasis on safety.
As part of BP, you will also be able to take part in additional activities outside of your role, whether it be supporting local community initiatives, our BP Business Resourcing Groups and you are given the encouragement and time to participate.
In addition, demonstrable data science skills would be advantageous for any geoscience candidate applying for a role in BP. Specifically, proficiency in using statistical methods to interrogate large datasets for geophysical insight, and in the application of using scripting languages such as Python and R, and development environments such as Jupyter and Rstudio.
We invite applications for internship positions within both our Subsurface and Technology organisations.
Subsurface Roles: The Subsurface organisation offers various opportunities for geophysicists to collaborate with geologists, reservoir engineers, and petrophysicists, supporting bp’s global exploration, appraisal, development, and production activities. We especially welcome candidates pursuing an MSc in Petroleum Geoscience or Geophysics, as well as PhD students, to apply for subsurface internships.
Technology Roles: With the appropriate background and ongoing research in numerical applications, algorithms, and coding you could work with our Imaging Technology group and high-performance computing centre. To support of a variety of complex subsurface challenges there are exciting opportunities for cutting-edge seismic processing, imaging and characterisation on bp’s dedicated super-computing resources. For these roles we encourage applications from PhD candidates, who have completed either a relevant BSc or MSc, who are now conducting research in geophysics specializations (seismic acquisition, processing & imaging, signal analysis, coding, etc).
To apply for this role, you will need to be undertaking or committed to further study of a relevant BSc (as a minimum) MSci, MSc or PhD in geophysics, earth science, environmental science, maths, and physics and be on track for a 2:1 or better.
-
Must be in penultimate year of study (those going onto a Master’s and PhD students can apply)
-
We would like to allow those who are penultimate year from starting work to apply so this would include those who are approaching their final year and taking a year out immediately after that final year traveling.
-
Completing a PhD and have 9-18 months remaining until your PhD completion date
You are also expected to have strong spoken and written English language skills, including business and technical English. Language skills will be assessed throughout the recruitment process.
